Buvuma Island District gets New Ferry

Buvuma Island district has got a new ferry which is going to make transport easier to residents and business community, thanks to the Uganda National Roads Authority and the Ministry of Works and Transport.

The ferry, MV Buvuma has been launched on Friday Morning will act as a driver for the agricultural development in Buvuma district and other businesses which are being set up in the area.

The ferry comes at a time when the district is experiencing a major facelift after the introduction of the Palm Oil Project.

Works and Transport Minister Katumba Wamala, UNRA Executive Director Allen Kagina and Agriculture Minister Vincent Ssempijja, while launching the ferry all agreed that good marine transport would drive development infrastructure in Island Districts.

The ferry is expected to carry 300 passengers and 12 vehicles. It has been undergoing repairs and upgrade at a floating dock at Port Bell, an inland port in Uganda’s capital, Kampala.

Buvuma County MP Robert Migadde Ndugwa says the ferry has been one of the major items government promised to provide for the people with the area.

He now asks government to provide an additional ferry for the people in the area to connect the rest of the 54 Islands that make up the district.

Buvuma has having an old ferry which had turned to be dangerous to people who have been using and sometimes could get a mechanical problem in transit.

The new ferry connects Buvuma from Kiyindi landing site found in Buikwe district and lands at Kirongo docking site located in Buvuma in Buvuma Island.
