Meet Esau Matsiko, a Ugandan accountant setting social media trends.
Many Ugandans think social media is a space to promote fights, political and show biz fights to be specific. To Matsiko however social media comes with business opportunities which can be leveraged to improve youths livelihoods amidst the scarcity of jobs among Ugandan graduates.
A job at ECO Bank as a Digital Channel Officer helped him to learn digital marketing skills.
Esau Matsiko is a Ugandan graduate Accountant from Makerere University Business School, MUBS. He graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce majoring in accounting.
Elizabeth Koshaba Nabuma talked with him for the Scribe Personality of the Week and to reward his entrepreneurial path that many Ugandan graduates are failing to adopt.
It’s early to say things are going on well with Matsiko but his focus and zeal which he shows when talking about social media influencing is enough to show that he is sure of where is going.
His journey started when he got a job at ECO Bank as a Digital Channel Officer, a position which required him to manage the company’s digital marketing content. To Matsiko, this is what opened another world that was bound to change his life forever.
Hailing from Kashari village in Mbarara, a western district of Uganda, Esau Matsiko’s childhood dream was to become a doctor but his secondary school math teacher, Mr. Andrew Cliff inspired him to become a banker.
Like many youths, Matsiko’s addiction to social media is also uncompromising.
“My social media addiction at one point became an issue And I feared it would fail my life. Am grateful to my supervisor at the bank who identified this weakness and turned it into my strength”, Matsiko admitted adding that the bank taught him to position his content for a particular audience type.
He confides that he didn’t know his contents were “influencing and impacting hard on lives”.
Matsiko describes his target audience as Ugandan soccer lovers.
He is strategically using social media to promote his Sportswear Business. He deals is a cloth printing business specializing in printing sports jerseys.
Advise to young graduates.
Matsiko advises that success is not achieved overnight and that where jobs are not readily available, graduates should use their competences to develop them into enterprises that can help them earn a living.
“Building a business requires the same energy required in the job hunt. Business however gives you more focus than a job,” Matsiko emphasizes.
He maintains that self esteem and confidence are very key in building a social media influencing profile. ” It’s a very hard work to build a following that can believe in your messages but if you avoid attacking people and stick to a ‘productive messages’, social media can really give you a good source of income”
“Avoid flirting with your social media followers and maintain a business relationship with them”, Matsiko advises fellow influencers. He insists that consistency and building very engaging contents is the secret to social media influencing.
When asked about his marital status, the youthful Matsiko laughed out loud and promised to marry when the right time comes.
In 2022, Matsiko lost his Twitter account with 8,000 followers. This however gave him more couragr to build a following of 122,000 following on x (formerly twittwer) at the time of publishing this article.
