Personality of the Week: Meet Mourine Asiimwe “Miss Conservation”

“I started *Plant a Tree Plant Hope* campaign with the target of greening Uganda with 10 million trees”- Mourine started our conversation.

Today in our personality of the week feature, we meet with Ms. Mourine Asiimwe, the Miss. Conservation Kigezi 2019/20 who is on a mission to plant 10 millions trees across Uganda.

Born in 1996, in Ntarabana Parish, Buhara sub_county in Kabale District, South Western Uganda. The third year student at Makerere University is pursuing a Bachelors degree of Science in Business Statistics.

The tree planting drive started in February 2020 and she has partially completed her Phase 1 of data collection (location of the area, availability of land, tree species needed, number of trees to be planted in each area) and as soon the world get back to order, she begins with Phase 2 which is planting of trees in the selected areas.

Although the COVID 19 lockdown affected her plans, but the conservation activist managed to establish a model garden with different environmental friendly indigenous tree species including fruits. She has also planted over 200 trees in 3 church communities in Kigezi for the same common cause.

Mourine’s environment conservation activism started when she was still a very young girl. “When I was a little girl, I would watch my mum doing conservation work under ECRAF and I appreciated giving her a helping hand in practicing Agroforestry, afforestation and community sensitization”- Mourine told us.

In the 2019/2020 Miss Tourism Kigezi contest, Mourine stepped out to participate with a strong desire to become the Conservation Ambassador, because she was passionate about environment and on 24th- 8-2019, she was crowned Miss Conservation Kigezi 2019/20.

Through her “Plant a Tree Plant Hope” drive, she has made a commitment to plant a tree for every new follower she gets on her social media accounts.

“This is intended to interconnect technology with conservation in away that the 1000 or 5000 followers I will get, are the trees I will have planted”- she told me.

Apparently Mourine’s work is privately financed by herself and she is looking forward to work hard in hand with whoever finds interest in this cause.
