Hon. Kabarongo Revisits Kiyindi Primary School in Lyatonde, Reinforces Commitment to Education

The introduction of Universal primary Education (UPE) in Uganda in 1997, a landmark government program which was planned to break a number of social barriers has faced a number of implementation challenges including a significant increase in the school enrollment amidst funding challenges.

Before the introduction of the program, a number of Ugandan children were unable to attend school due to financial challenges. According to the Uganda media Center, school enrollment increased by 73% from 2.5 million in 1996 to 5.3 million in 1997. According to Uganda statistics the number of school going children in public primary schools had reached 8.6 million by 2023.

This unprecedented increased school enrollment created a budget problem to the government of Uganda thereby leading to more challenges.

The Uganda national Authority reports that for over 10 years, UPE funding has remained stagnant between 5,000 to 10,000 Uganda shillings a figure said to be far below the expected 50,000 Uganda shillings. This underfunding problem has left a number of schools in Uganda with lack of infrastructural development, underpayment of teachers, among others.

Kabarongo’s Generous Efforts

In a gesture that highlights her dedication to education and community development, aspiring Woman Member of Parliament Hon. Hon. Gernerous Kabarongo Namara Mugisha recently revisited Kiyindi Primary School in Kaliiro, Lyatonde District. The visit came after her initial support, during which she donated paint to help renovate the school’s infrastructure. Her ongoing involvement has contributed to transforming the school into a more inviting environment for learning.

During the visit, Hon. Kabarongo announced plans to provide bursaries to Primary Seven students who achieve top grades, promising to support those who excel academically.

Hon. Kabarongo’s engagement underscores her focus on addressing challenges faced by the education sector in Lyatonde District. Her willingness to support both students and schools has garnered positive community feedback, reflecting her commitment to fostering educational opportunities.

As Lyatonde District continues to navigate development challenges, leaders like Hon. Kabarongo, who prioritize education and community welfare, offer hope for a brighter future. Her ongoing efforts and vision for improved learning environments are seen as steps toward creating lasting positive change for the district’s students.

The UPE program, which is credited to have helped a number of Ugandan children attain education amidst funding challenges, a number of Ugandan politicians have continued to use it as a tool to discredit government accusing it of failing to provide quality education and infrastructural  development. Kind hearted politicians like Kabarongo have however decided to take a positive root by providing support in their community believed to be contributing towards the development of their community.

With community backing and a shared commitment to progress, Hon. Kabarongo’s contributions are poised to leave a meaningful and lasting impact on Lyatonde’s educational landscape.
