Mayambala to take over Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu (Bobi Wine) petition writes to Supreme Court

Former Presidential candidate in the just concluded 2021 general elections, Willy Mayambala a resident of Mukono district has written to the Supreme Court expressing interest in taking over the petition by National Unity Platform leader Robert Kyagulanyi challenging President Museveni’s victory.

Kyagulanyi on Wednesday formally applied to court to allow him withdraw the petition after citing bias of the judges.

However, in a twist of events, Mayambala who came last in the January 14 polls has expressed interest in taking over the petition abandoned by Kyagulanyi.

“I write to object to the withdraw of the presidential petition formerly logged in by Hon. Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu against several defendants as outlined in his petition. I as well write to express interest in taking on the presidential petition and seek to inherit the petition,”Mayambala said in his letter to the Supreme Court.

In his letter, Mayambala wants court to taking him through the necessary procedures and the other requirements to enable him take over the petition and whether there is any chance for him to present new evidence in the case.

“I wish to re-affirm that I presidential candidate Willy Mayambala have great interest in the presidential petition going on and being listened to by the honorable court , please grant me the necessary permission to go on.”

In his application, Kyagulanyi says he has been forced to withdraw the petition he filed because he thinks the court has not put in place grounds favorable for his petition to succeed.

“The petitioner’s witnesses are being abducted, tortured, harassed and intimidated by state security operatives at the behest of the first(Museveni) and third respondent(Attorney General)’s agents. Organs of the state like Uganda Police Force and NIRA are being used by the respondents to investigate and infringe on privacy of the petitioner’s witnesses,”Kyagulanyi says in his application.

The runner-up in the January 14 polls argues that procedural rules governing presidential election petitions have been applied to disadvantage him in such a way that he was denied time to amend his petition and being stopped from filing additional evidence.

“After deeply reflecting upon the foregoing circumstances, I reached a decision that withdrawing the instant petition is the right thing to do since this court is not handling the petition with the independence, impartiality and equality I expected of it.”

The court is set to sit and decide the fate of Kyagulanyi’s application to withdraw the January 14 poll petition.

ALL SENIOR SIX VACISTS TO UNDERGO PATRIOTISM TRAINING AT NALI

All Senior Six vacists in Uganda will undergo patriotism training at the National Leadership Institute (NALI), Kyankwanzi, under a renewed government programme aimed at promoting discipline, patriotism, national identity and responsibility among young people.    The Commissioner of the National Secretariat for Patriotism Corps (NSPC), Hellen Seku, said the programme will begin this year, with the vacists expected to spend about six months at Kyankwanzi. Ms. Seku made the announcement today at Immaculate Heart Girls’ Secondary School Nyakibale in Rukungiri District, where more than 1,700 students from four institutions completed a week-long patriotism training programme. “I can assure you, head teacher, we are going to begin this year. So, this year we agreed with Jaaja (President Museveni) that all Senior Six vacists are going to Kyankwanzi. You’re going to go for about six months,” Ms. Seku said. She said patrons, coordinators, teachers and head teachers who have not undergone patriotism training will also be required to undertake refresher courses. “All patrons and coordinators are going to do a refresher course, including teachers and head teachers who have not yet trained, even those who have taken long. We want everybody to undergo the training,” she said. The announcement marks a revival of a programme that previously brought students and other Ugandans together at Kyankwanzi for ideological and patriotism training. One of the head teachers who attended the event, Gadgar Kibayo Arinitwe of Makobore High School, recalled undergoing a similar programme at Kyankwanzi in 1993 after completing Senior Six. He said the lessons acquired during the training continued to influence his outlook on life decades later. “We were at Kyankwanzi for two months, but I must confess that the values we acquired then have kept shaping our outlook on life,” Mr. Kibayo said. He recalled being taught what he described as the “10 Commandments of a gun”, including a rule against taking alcohol while in possession of a rifle. The students who completed the programme were drawn from Immaculate Heart Girls’ Secondary School Nyakibale, Karoli Lwanga Institute of Health Sciences, Kinyasano Girls’ High School and Makobore High School. They underwent ideology sessions facilitated by various trainers, alongside early morning drills and parades. According to Ms. Seku, the training is intended to inculcate good norms and values among learners while extending patriotism education beyond schools to other sections of society. ...
