“Be good leaders of today, tomorrow and be patriotic”-SPA/PA Hon Ruth Katushabe urges Kampala student leaders

The Special Presidential Advisor on Political Affairs and Translations Hon Ruth Katushabe on Wednesday 4th October 2023 met the Kampala Student leaders under their umbrella the Kampala City Students Council at Hotel Africana in Kampala where she thanked them for organizing a very successful student council convention at Lubiri Secondary School late last month an event that also saw the successful election of new students leaders in a free and fair election.

Speaking to the student leaders delegation that was led by the Kampala Capital City UNSA coordinator Mr. Isaac Kizito and the Student’s outgoing Speaker Aliak Walter, Hon Katushabe thanked them for being good leaders even amidst challenges that come with the offices they hold. She also thanked the leaders for loving Uganda and being good examples for the hundreds of thousands of students they lead.

Hon Katushabe also urged the student leaders to be at the forefront of fighting drug abuse in schools as well as being obedient to the teachers and the parents/guardians that pay their tuition. She further asked the leaders to be focused on their studies and always to have role models that they look up to, to work hard and see that they reach the same level with them or even better in their lives.

Hon Katushabe further pledged full support to the student leadership at any time they may need her adding that this is exactly what President Museveni wants as he wants to see the young generation being empowered and prepared to be able to take over the leadership of this country in the future.

Hon Ruth Katushabe also used the opportunity to thank the outgoing UNSA Speaker Mr. Aliak Walter for the good leadership skills he has showcased while being Speaker and also wishing him success in his forthcoming S.6 UNEB papers that he is to sit for early next month.

She also thanked the Kampala City Students UNSA coordinator Mr. Kizito Isaac for the efforts he has put in to make sure that the student leadership within Kampala is functioning and operational in all schools in the capital city.

The Student leaders thanked Hon Ruth Katushabe for first of all Honouring their invitation as guest of Honour at the Kampala Students Council convention late last month at Lubiri SS including the powerful words of knowledge she passed on during her speech to the students. They further thanked her for always standing by their side asking her to also do the same for the different student councils in other districts of the country.

ALL SENIOR SIX VACISTS TO UNDERGO PATRIOTISM TRAINING AT NALI

All Senior Six vacists in Uganda will undergo patriotism training at the National Leadership Institute (NALI), Kyankwanzi, under a renewed government programme aimed at promoting discipline, patriotism, national identity and responsibility among young people.    The Commissioner of the National Secretariat for Patriotism Corps (NSPC), Hellen Seku, said the programme will begin this year, with the vacists expected to spend about six months at Kyankwanzi. Ms. Seku made the announcement today at Immaculate Heart Girls’ Secondary School Nyakibale in Rukungiri District, where more than 1,700 students from four institutions completed a week-long patriotism training programme. “I can assure you, head teacher, we are going to begin this year. So, this year we agreed with Jaaja (President Museveni) that all Senior Six vacists are going to Kyankwanzi. You’re going to go for about six months,” Ms. Seku said. She said patrons, coordinators, teachers and head teachers who have not undergone patriotism training will also be required to undertake refresher courses. “All patrons and coordinators are going to do a refresher course, including teachers and head teachers who have not yet trained, even those who have taken long. We want everybody to undergo the training,” she said. The announcement marks a revival of a programme that previously brought students and other Ugandans together at Kyankwanzi for ideological and patriotism training. One of the head teachers who attended the event, Gadgar Kibayo Arinitwe of Makobore High School, recalled undergoing a similar programme at Kyankwanzi in 1993 after completing Senior Six. He said the lessons acquired during the training continued to influence his outlook on life decades later. “We were at Kyankwanzi for two months, but I must confess that the values we acquired then have kept shaping our outlook on life,” Mr. Kibayo said. He recalled being taught what he described as the “10 Commandments of a gun”, including a rule against taking alcohol while in possession of a rifle. The students who completed the programme were drawn from Immaculate Heart Girls’ Secondary School Nyakibale, Karoli Lwanga Institute of Health Sciences, Kinyasano Girls’ High School and Makobore High School. They underwent ideology sessions facilitated by various trainers, alongside early morning drills and parades. According to Ms. Seku, the training is intended to inculcate good norms and values among learners while extending patriotism education beyond schools to other sections of society. ...
