Rubanda District — State Minister for Finance, Hon Henry Musasizi has described religious sectarianism as the biggest challenge he faced during the last NRM primary elections, revealing that he has formally reported the matter to President Yoweri Museveni.

Speaking on Friday at Rubanda Catholic Parish during celebrations to mark the Assumption of Mary, Musasizi said his report to the President detailed everything that transpired during the last party primaries, including what he termed “sectarian politics based on religion.”

The problem of sectarian politics is part of the report, and the President pledged to do something about it, Musasizi told the congregation, adding, “I think some people have already been summoned over this.”

The minister urged Rubanda residents to embrace politics of merit rather than divisions rooted in religious identity.

I need you to join me in promoting politics where people’s needs and interests take the lead as we choose leaders for this district. That is the only sustainable politics we need, he said.

He stressed the importance of electing leaders with the ability to identify and solve problems affecting all residents, regardless of faith.

Let’s vote for people who can ably diagnose our challenges and find solutions, not simply those who share our religion, Musasizi said.

Musasizi’s remarks come amid growing concern in Rubanda District over political choices being influenced by religious affiliation, a trend many observers warn could undermine unity and development.

Sectarianism is a criminal offence in Uganda under the Penal Code Act (Section 41), which prohibits acts, speeches, or writings that promote hostility among groups on the basis of religion, tribe, or ethnicity. Conviction can attract up to five years’ imprisonment.

The Ugandan Constitution also underlines national unity, with Article 21 guaranteeing equality and freedom from discrimination on grounds including religion.

Religious sectarianism erodes social cohesion, fuels division, and distracts from addressing the real needs of the population.
