Tooro Kingdom Succession crisis Deepens, Rukidi Kijanangoma Rejects the Appointment 

The former Uganda Broadcasting Corporation presenter was announced as the new King on Wednesday following a decision by the Babiito Royal Clan, ending days of intense speculation over who would succeed the late King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.

However, sources say Kijanangoma has since communicated his reluctance to Omusuuga Charles Kamurasi, the head of the Babiito Royal Clan.

At the centre of his reported concerns is the potential conflict between his Christian faith, his existing marriage and certain traditional customs associated with the institution of the Omukama.

Kijanangoma is married to Rebecca Amoding-Rukidi, a Human Resource and Organisational Development professional from Eastern Uganda.

Sources say the new King was uncomfortable with traditional expectations surrounding marriage and the production of a royal heir, reportedly fearing that accepting the throne could require him to make decisions that conflict with both his religious convictions and family life.

He is said to have told those close to the process that he was simply not ready for such a commitment.

The development comes barely days after another royal contender, George Desmond Kamurasi, reportedly declined to take up the Tooro throne.

Kamurasi, a London-based footballer and coach, had initially been announced by journalist Andrew Mwenda as the preferred successor following a meeting of a Royal Succession Committee.

He was reportedly reluctant to abandon his established life in the United Kingdom, where he lives with his wife and son. Reports at the time indicated that family considerations were among the reasons behind his hesitation over accepting the throne.

His reported rejection forced the Babiito clan to revisit the succession process, eventually leading to the selection of Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma.

Kijanangoma’s selection had already attracted international attention, with Reuters and Associated Press reporting that the former state broadcaster journalist had emerged as King Oyo’s successor.

But his reported decision to now reject the throne could plunge Tooro’s succession into fresh uncertainty.

The Kingdom is already facing competing claims over King Oyo’s successor, including the emergence of a 2022 will in which the late monarch reportedly laid out his own succession plan beginning with his direct son.

With George Desmond Kamurasi reportedly declining the throne and Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma now also said to be unwilling to take up the position, the Babiito Royal Clan could once again be forced back to the drawing board.

For Tooro, the search for King Oyo’s successor may be far from over.
