The deputy speaker of Ugandan parliament Thomas Tayebwa joined the Commissioner General of Prisons Can. Dr. Johnson Byabashaija, his family, friends and Christians of North Kigezi Diocese for his Thanksgiving service at Kololo led by Rt. Rev. Onesmus Asiimwe.
The event also served as a fundraising drive towards the construction of the diocese Cathedral.
His Excellency Yoweri Kaguta Museveni who was represented by Rt. Hon. Dr. Crispus Kiyonga who paid a glowing tribute to Dr. Byabashaija for his patriotic spirit of service to the nation.
Dr. Byabashaija thanked God for many blessings, including 43 years of service, 21 of which he has been serving as Commissioner General of Prisons, 69 years of life and 35 years of marriage.
Throughout his four decades of service, Can. Byabashaija has never forgotten the Lord. He also serves the Church as head of laity of North Kigezi Diocese and Chairperson of the Kampala Fellowship for the Diocese.
“He is a man of impeccable and unquestionable integrity, a virtue that is also reflected in his leadership of the Uganda Prisons Service. The institution rarely receives audit queries from the Auditor General.” Tayebwa added
Under his leadership, Uganda Prisons has undergone a remarkable transformation, from a largely punitive institution into a professional correctional service focused on rehabilitation and reform. Uganda ranks high among countries with low rates of released prisoners returning to prison. This is because they leave prisons when they are transformed.
I thank Hon. Jim Muhwezi who serves as patron of North Kigezi Diocese Kampala Fellowship and Hon. Henry Tumukunde who played an instrumental role in organising today’s event.” He added.
