ALHAJI KIRUNDA MOURNS AFRIGO BAND’S MOSES MATOVU, HAILS MUSICAL LEGACY

The Special Presidential Assistant–Press and Mobilisation and Deputy Press Secretary to H.E the President, Alhaji Faruk Kirunda, has mourned the death of veteran musician Moses Matovu, describing him as an “irreplaceable gem” whose contribution to Uganda’s music industry spanned decades.

Matovu, a celebrated member of Afrigo Band, was killed on Thursday, September 24, 2026, following an alleged attack by unknown assailants in Kampala.

In a message posted on X today, Alhaji Kirunda said Matovu’s death came at a particularly painful time for Uganda’s music fraternity, coming shortly after the death of fellow veteran playwright Alex Mukulu.

“The tragic loss of Moses Matovu soon after losing Alex Mukulu is too much to bear,” he said.

He noted that Matovu began performing in the 1960s and had maintained a distinctive musical style and high standards throughout his career.

“Having started performing in the 1960s, Matovu has maintained a unique style and standard, free of controversy and mentored many,” he said.

Alhaji Kirunda described Matovu as a major attraction at Afrigo Band and praised his contribution to nurturing younger musicians.

“He was a major attraction at Afrigo and leaves a legacy for young artistes to emulate,” he added.

The Special Presidential Assistant also condemned the circumstances surrounding Matovu’s death, saying the musician’s killers had deprived the country of a valuable cultural figure.

“His killers have robbed the nation of an irreplaceable gem,” Alhaji Kirunda said.

He extended his condolences to Matovu’s family, Afrigo Band, his fans and Ugandans at large.

Matovu’s death has sent shockwaves through Uganda’s music industry, with tributes pouring in for one of the country’s longest-serving musicians and a prominent figure in the history of Afrigo Band.
