Ambassador Nekesa Spearheads Historic NRM Sweep as 566 LC1 Chairpersons Go Unopposed Across Bukedi

In a resounding show of grassroots strength, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) has secured a dominant early victory in the Bukedi sub-region, with 566 LC1 chairperson candidates declared unopposed across six districts ahead of the July 28 Local Council elections. All of them are official NRM flag bearers.

The landmark result, highlighted in official party communications, covers 2,506 villages in Pallisa, Busia, Butaleja, Butebo, Kibuku and Budaka districts. National Treasurer and Bukedi Sub-region Team Leader Ambassador Barbara Nekesa Oundo has been widely credited with driving the intensive mobilisation that delivered this outcome.

According to the figures:

Pallisa: 121 unopposed out of 498 villages (24.30%)

Busia: 105 out of 568 (18.49%)

Butaleja: 99 out of 443 (22.35%)

Butebo: 98 out of 269 (36.43%) — the highest percentage

Kibuku: 81 out of 405 (20%)

Budaka: 62 out of 323 (19.20%)

Overall, 22.59% of the villages in the sub-region will see NRM candidates take office without contest.

Party sources and local leaders attribute the success to Ambassador Nekesa Oundo’s strategic leadership. As both National Treasurer and the designated Bukedi Team Leader, she has led coordinated entry meetings, engaged grassroots mobilisers, Members of Parliament and sub-regional structures, and repeatedly called for intensified mobilisation and unity at the village level in the weeks leading up to nominations.

Her approach combined organisational discipline with direct engagement, ensuring NRM structures were fully activated and potential challengers either stepped aside or failed to gather sufficient support. The result is being celebrated as clear evidence of the party’s deep roots in Bukedi and of Nekesa Oundo’s effectiveness in translating national strategy into local wins.

“All unopposed candidates are NRM Flag bearers,” the party materials emphasise, underscoring the clean sweep of these positions. With voting scheduled for 28 July, the remaining contested seats will still go to the polls, but the 566 unopposed victories already guarantee a strong NRM presence at the lowest level of local government across the sub-region.

Ambassador Barbara Nekesa Oundo’s role has drawn particular praise from party ranks. Colleagues describe her as a steady, results-oriented leader who has strengthened financial discipline at the national level while simultaneously delivering concrete political gains on the ground in her home sub-region. The Bukedi success is being held up as a model of effective grassroots organisation under her stewardship.
