Chaos Erupts in Court as Besigye’s Bail Hearing Turns Into Shambles.

Kampala, Uganda – The bail hearing for opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye and his associate, Obeid Lutale, descended into chaos at the General Court Martial in Makindye on Tuesday. The tense proceedings were marked by heated exchanges among the defense team, Judge Advocate Brigadier-General Richard Tukacungurwa, and the prosecution.

The Nile Post reports that Supporters of Dr. Besigye packed the courtroom, chanting “We will never surrender” as they awaited a decision on objections raised against the trial. However, the session ended with no resolution, and the case was adjourned to January 7, 2025.

The defense team, led by Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago and lawyer Eron Kiiza, faced logistical challenges, including a lack of adequate seating. Tensions flared when Kiiza accused the Judge Advocate of exceeding his role, sparking a heated exchange.

The prosecution accused the defense of unprofessional behavior, claiming that Kiiza had publicly undermined the court. However, Kiiza dismissed these claims as distractions, reiterating calls for the release of an abducted colleague.

The adjournment has prolonged the uncertainty surrounding Dr. Besigye’s fate, but his supporters remain steadfast, vowing to fight for justice.

Dr. Besigye was arrested on allegations of planning rebel activities. His bail hearing has been marred by controversy, with the defense team facing numerous challenges.
