Business Community in Lugazi Beat up Demonstrators Banging Saucepans Demanding for Food

The Business community with help of NRM supporters in Geregere trading center, Lugazi Municipality Buikwe district has roughed up Forum for Democratic Change- FDC and People Power supporters over banging of source pans and jerrycans in the trading center.

The supporters who had been mobilized by the Chairperson FDC Buikwe district Jimmy Kanabi moved to the trading center banging source pans demanding for food were surrounded up by shop attendants, boda boda riders and were beaten up for making noise.

Some of the businessmen say these people are being idle and making noise for others who are working in the disguise of the “No Nedda” campaign.

Kenneth Mukisa says that they will not allow people to demonstrate from their area over such useless campaigns.

Joel Kakooza a shop attendant in Lugazi says he is a grown up person to start engaging himself in such activities.

Peter Isabirye one of the participants in the campaign says that people are taking law into their hands to beat them who are demonstrating peaceful.

Paul Kalyango says that he engaged in the activity of banging sauce pans as a way to show to current government in power that they are not okay with the situation after being home for long and they have not received any assistance from it to support their families.

Kalyango accused Police of using NRM goons from Lugazi to beat them up disguising that they are fighting for their rights to work.

However Paul Kizito a boda boda rider says that government should respond to people’s cry before the situation gets bad

The scuffles left at least 3 people injured and are now hospitalized at Joska Medical Clinic in Lugazi who included the former Mayor Lugazi Municipality Asea Ozima, John Bosco, Paul Kalyango and 2 who were arrested by police and taken to Lugazi police station.

The “No Nedda” campaign in Lugazi has been organized by the FDC Chairperson Buikwe Jimmy Kanabi as a way to respond to FDC leader Kizza Besigye and People Power leader Robert Kyagulanyi where they called upon Ugandans to show their displeasure against President Yoweri Museveni’s government.

The campaign targeting Ugandans who are still held home due to the COVID-19 lockdown, those who have lost jobs and all those who are dissatisfied with the current government, to drum whatever items they can every day at 1 pm to express their anger.

Police claims demonstrators didn’t seek permission yet their campaign gathers people which is against the presidential directive of keeping social distance during the battle against the global pandemic of COVID-19.
