Entebbe police continue their detailed investigation into a significant gold smuggling case involving a clearing agent and a customs officer from the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA).
Both were apprehended on Saturday at Entebbe International Airport. The duo is currently under scrutiny for their alleged involvement in an attempted smuggling operation involving a substantial haul of 50 kilograms of gold.
Due to the sensitive nature of the ongoing investigation, the arrested individuals’ identities are being withheld.
Authorities suspect that this pair is linked to a larger smuggling syndicate that has been active in facilitating the illegal importation of gold from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) for distribution in the United States.
According to the Entebbe mineral police chief, the arrests followed a thorough surveillance operation. Upon their apprehension, law enforcement officials seized the 50 kg gold shipment, which is believed to be part of a broader network engaged in corrupt practices.
The suspects are expected to be brought before the Entebbe Chief Magistrates Court, where they will face serious charges, including corruption, bribery, and conspiracy.
The context for such smuggling activities lies in Uganda’s reliance on gold imports, as local gold production is insufficient to meet documented export demands.
Notably, Uganda’s imports from neighboring Tanzania saw a dramatic increase in June 2024, escalating to $1.77 billion, a significant rise from $450.46 million reported in June 2023.
This surge highlights the growing importance of gold in Uganda’s economy and underscores the need for stringent measures to combat illicit trading and uphold the integrity of Uganda’s customs operations.
