Geography Teachers Cry Out for Recognition: “We’re Scientists, Not Artists!”

Busembatya, Uganda– In a passionate plea, geography teachers across the country are calling on the Ministry of Education to recognize their subject as a science discipline, rather than an arts subject.

At the forefront of this campaign is Teacher Musenge Nelson, a seasoned geography teacher with over two decades of experience. Speaking to our reporter at Busembatia Secondary School in Bugweri District, Teacher Musenge Nelson emphasized the scientific nature of geography.

“Geography is not just about memorizing maps and capitals,” he said. “It’s a scientific discipline that requires a deep understanding of physical and human processes that shape our world.”

Teacher Musenge Nelson pointed out that geography is a crucial component of many science courses, including agriculture, forestry, mining, and engineering. He also noted that geography teachers are not eligible for the same benefits and recognition as their science counterparts.

“We’re not asking for special treatment,” he clarified. “We’re simply asking for recognition of the scientific value of geography and the important role it plays in understanding our world.”

The Ministry of Education has been urged to reconsider the classification of geography as an arts subject. By recognizing geography as a science subject, the ministry can ensure that geography teachers receive the recognition and benefits they deserve.

This reclassification can also have a positive impact on the education system as a whole, by emphasizing the scientific aspects of geography and preparing students for careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

As Teacher Musenge Nelson put it, “We hope that our voices will be heard and that action will be taken to address this issue. We’re scientists, not artists. It’s time for our subject to be recognized as such.”

Uganda has for a long time faced a challenge of teacher renumeration prompting teachers to stage a union strike every year demanding for a pay rise.

The government of Uganda amidst challenges with the wage bill, has recently increased science teachers’ salaries making their arts counterparts disoriented.
