RUKIGA, UGANDA — A storm is brewing in Rukiga District following a string of alleged abductions reported in the aftermath of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party primaries. On Thursday morning, a visibly agitated delegation of district leaders led by Rukiga District NRM Chairperson Frank Kyerere stormed the office of the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) in Muhanga Town Council, demanding urgent answers and government intervention.

The group, which included members of the District Executive Committee (DEC), accused security operatives of targeting supporters of Sylivia Arinaitwe, the recently declared NRM flag bearer for the Rukiga Woman Member of Parliament seat.

According to Kyerere, the abductions appear to be politically motivated and have created a climate of fear across the district. He claimed that individuals believed to be supporters of Arinaitwe have been picked up by unknown people identifying themselves as operatives from the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) headquarters in Kampala.

Some people are being taken in broad daylight with no clear charges. We believe this is being orchestrated by the husband of the incumbent Woman MP, Hon. Caroline Kamusiime Muhwezi,” Kyerere alleged while addressing the RDC.

He further accused the said individuals of operating without coordination with local security agencies and questioned the legality of their presence in Rukiga.

The leaders, many of whom have stood by Arinaitwe’s camp in the heated NRM primaries, warned that continued silence from security organs could spark unrest in the district.

This is not just a political matter anymore,it is a matter of public safety and constitutional rights. People are being taken without warrants, without explanation, and no one knows where they are being held,” said one of the DEC members, who preferred anonymity due to security concerns.

RDC Harriet Nakamya, who received the delegation, promised to escalate the matter to higher authorities and insisted that no one is above the law.

I will report this to the Office of the President and the Ministry of Internal Affairs. If there are security operatives here, they must work through official channels and be accountable to local security committees,” she said.

Efforts to reach Hon. Caroline Kamusiime Muhwezi for comment were unsuccessful by press time.

The incident explains the growing tensions in the region following contentious party primaries that have left the ruling NRM party grappling with internal rifts, particularly in southwestern Uganda. Analysts warn that such unresolved disputes may compromise cohesion within the party ahead of the 2026 general elections.

As the RDC initiates an investigation, the district waits with bated breath to see whether the allegations will be probed and whether those reportedly abducted will resurface.

This is a developing story……..
