Ugandan University Ranks Among Africa’s Best Universities.

KAMPALA, Uganda – Makerere University has been ranked 52nd among the top universities in Africa, according to the latest Times Higher Education World University Rankings by Subject 2025.

The rankings, which were released on Wednesday 22, evaluated universities based on 18 indicators, including teaching, research environment, research quality, international outlook, and industry.

Egypt, South Africa, and Nigeria topped the list of the best universities in Africa, with Egypt being the best performer in the region. Egypt-Japan University of Science and Technology (E-JUST) ranked in the top 400 in Physical Sciences, while South Africa’s University of Johannesburg entered the top 200 in Business and Economics.

Makerere University’s ranking is a significant milestone for Uganda’s education sector, demonstrating the country’s growing reputation for academic excellence. The university’s strong performance is attributed to its emphasis on research, innovation, and international collaboration.

“We are proud of this achievement and recognize the hard work and dedication of our students, staff, and faculty,” said a spokesperson for Makerere University. “We will continue to strive for excellence and improve our rankings in the future.”
