UNRA Starts Construction of Kampala, Mukono-Jinja Highway
The Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) on Monday closed one lane of the Kampala-Mukono-Jinja highway to enable the contractor doing a nine month emergency repairs work smoothly.
In a Monday statement, UNRA officials said they contracted Energoprojkt-Niskogradnja to execute the work.
The section affected is between Bweyogerere and Namanve, known for high traffic.
The statement said the contractor is expected to spend nine months to complete repairs on the stretch between Spear Motors in Nakawa to Mukono town. The work started on June 17.
“Subsequently, one lane of the section of the road between Bweyogerere and Namanve will be temporarily closed to traffic starting at 10.00pm tonight July 8 (last night),” the statement reads in part.
UNRA has diverted the traffic to Namboole-Industrial Park road. The works to be done during the nine months include; granular sub base construction; a 200 millimetre CRR base construction and a 100 millimetre thick asphalt wearing course.
Kampala-Mukono-Jinja highway motorists have been braving heavy traffic on a daily basis despite since the road has a lot of damages.
UNRA has designs for the construction of the Kampala-Jinja Expressway aimed at easing traffic flow between Kampala and Jinja.
