Babirye Kabanda
The Democratic Party treasurer in Uganda, Hon. Babirye Kabanda, has officially announced her candidacy for the Masaka District Woman Member of Parliament seat in the upcoming 2026 general elections.
This decision underscores her political ambition to awaken Masaka District from economic stagnation, champion education, and restore prominence to Uganda’s oldest political party through proactive leadership and dedicated service to the community.
Hon. Kabanda previously represented Masaka District in 2016, earning widespread recognition for her bold and people-centered approach to governance. She notably opposed the controversial sugar bill, which would have empowered foreign investors and sugar companies at the expense of local sugarcane farmers and traders—a move that earned her immense support among grassroots communities and stakeholders in Uganda’s agricultural sector.
During her announcement in Masaka District on Sunday, Kabanda addressed a jubilant crowd, expressing her unwavering commitment to serve all constituents, regardless of the political leadership at the national level. “I am willing to work for all of the people in this area. I don’t care whether the President of Uganda is President Museveni or other leaders; my focus has always been my people.

I have been able to secure bursaries and funding from donors in Canada, the United States, and Germany under President Museveni’s government, so I have no problem working for my people regardless of who governs the country,” she said, as the crowd erupted in thunderous applause.
Hon. Kabanda’s dedication to education and community service has earned her commendation from Buganda Kingdom’s His Majesty King Ronald Mutebi, who lauded her for facilitating free education initiatives that have benefited thousands of students across Uganda, including Catholic priests in various parishes, with Bukalasa Seminary being one of the most notable beneficiaries.
As the founder and proprietor of St. Jude Secondary School in Kyabakuza, Masaka City, Hon. Babirye Kabanda has built a lasting legacy as a mentor, educator, and community leader. Her school has served as a hub for academic excellence, leadership training, and talent development, producing professionals who have gone on to serve in various sectors nationally and internationally. Her visionary approach to education emphasizes not only academic performance but also character formation, civic responsibility, and leadership skills among the youth.
Beyond education, Hon. Babirye Kabanda has demonstrated remarkable community leadership through her philanthropic initiatives. Under the Hon. Babirye Kabanda Foundation, she has supported education, religious organizations, and social development projects across Masaka District and the greater region. She has donated books, tents, and learning materials, empowering local leaders, students, and community groups to thrive.
Her initiatives have bridged gaps across religious divides, benefiting Catholics, Born-Again Christians, Muslims, and other faith communities through the funding of schools, church activities, and mosques, demonstrating a commitment to unity, inclusivity, and peace.
Her contributions to religious and community cohesion highlight a leadership philosophy centered on service above self. Hon. Kabanda has emphasized the importance of collaboration among different faiths and social groups, using her resources and influence to foster understanding, tolerance, and development. This approach underscores her ability to address diverse community needs, a quality critical for effective representation in Parliament.
Masaka District, despite its economic potential, continues to face challenges including youth unemployment, inadequate infrastructure, and limited access to quality education and healthcare. Hon. Babirye Kabanda’s 2026 campaign platform emphasizes actionable solutions in these areas. She plans to expand educational opportunities, promote economic empowerment programs for women and youth, and attract investment to boost local industries, ensuring Masaka District achieves sustainable growth and development.
Her strategic vision for the district also includes leveraging her network of local and international partners to mobilize resources for infrastructural projects, healthcare support, and skill development programs. Her previous success in securing funding from international donors and her collaborative approach with government institutions underscore her capacity to deliver tangible results for her constituents.
In announcing her candidature, Hon. Babirye Kabanda called on all residents of Masaka District to unite behind a leadership that prioritizes service, accountability, and community empowerment. “Leadership is not about partisan politics; it is about action, results, and impact on people’s lives. My ambition is to ensure that every young person, woman, and family in Masaka District has access to opportunities for growth, education, and prosperity,” she affirmed.
Her candidacy represents more than a political ambition—it symbolizes a renewal of hope, competence, and transformative leadership in Masaka District. As a seasoned legislator, philanthropist, and community advocate, Hon. Babirye Kabanda brings a blend of experience, vision, and dedication that positions her to make a significant impact on the lives of the people she serves.
In conclusion, Hon. Babirye Kabanda stands as a pillar of integrity, commitment, and social responsibility.
Her candidacy for the Masaka District Woman Member of Parliament seat is not only a pursuit of political office but also a continuation of a lifelong mission to uplift communities, unite people across religious and social divides, and champion education and empowerment. With her track record and unwavering dedication, she remains a beacon of hope for Masaka District as it looks forward to sustainable development and inclusive leadership in the years ahead.
