MIKE SSEGAWA, The Mukono’s best gift to the people of Kassanda District

In the heart of Mukono District, there lived a young boy raised by a single mother who believed in the power of hard work, integrity, and community. Born into humble beginnings, Mike Ssegawa learned early on that every challenge faced in life is an opportunity to rise above and uplift others along the way.

Mike’s mother, Rebecca Christine Nakagabane, taught him the value of resilience. She showed him that despite any hardships, a family could grow strong with love, sacrifice, and perseverance. Growing up in Kitebe Namaliga, in Seeta Nazigo parish, Mike saw firsthand how communities could thrive when they stood together, and how families could flourish despite the odds.

Rising from the Roots: Leadership through Service

His journey took him to new places and experiences. From pursuing education and youth studies in Kenya to traveling across different countries, Mike absorbed diverse lessons, but his heart remained with the people in Uganda. When he returned, he decided it was time to give back, not just with words, but with action.

In 2021, Mike ran for the position of Councillor for Ggulu Ward Ngandu. It wasn’t just politics for him—it was personal. He had experienced the struggles of poor roads when he carried his daughter through the muddy streets to get her to school. He felt the frustration of his neighbors who were neglected by leaders they trusted. That day, when the councillor demanded money from villagers to repair the road, Mike saw an opportunity to do things differently. He took the issue to the district, brought back a grader, and fixed the road at half the cost.

It was a small victory, but it lit a spark in Mike and his community. They called him “Councillor” long before he held the title, because he had proven to them that he wasn’t just another voice; he was a doer, a problem-solver.

Building Bridges and Creating Opportunities

In each role Mike served—whether as a journalist giving a voice to the voiceless, or as a Deputy RDC bridging communities—his mission was clear: to create opportunities, build unity, and solve problems. His vision was never just about his success, but about the success of every family, every child, and every farmer in Mukono and beyond.

When Mike was transferred to Kassanda, it wasn’t just another posting; it was another chance to serve. He saw the same challenges in Kassanda that he had experienced in Mukono—youth struggling to find work, families torn apart by land conflicts, and communities needing guidance to seize government programs. He saw the same hardworking people who just needed a fair chance.

Walking the Path Together

As Mike took on the role of Deputy RDC in Kassanda, he knew that his journey was deeply connected with the journey of every resident. He understood that the strength of a community is built on the unity of its people, and that real change comes not from grand speeches but from daily actions and a willingness to listen.

He believes in using every opportunity to build bridges, just as he has in the past. By bringing together traditional leaders, religious heads, youth representatives, and business stakeholders, Mike is determined to create an environment where every voice is heard, and every effort is rewarded.

His life story isn’t just about rising to leadership; it’s about helping others rise too. It’s about showing up at local meetings, listening to elders share their wisdom, and inspiring the youth to dream big but start small. Mike believes that the solutions to Kassanda’s challenges lie within its people, and his job is to empower and mobilize them to find those solutions together.

A Leader Rooted in Values

Mike’s leadership is grounded in the values of integrity, humility, and service. He believes that leadership is not a position; it’s a responsibility. He doesn’t just lead from the front; he stands among the people, shoulder to shoulder, committed to building a beautiful, peaceful, and prosperous Kassanda.

From fixing roads with his bare hands to fighting disease outbreaks, Mike’s journey is proof that a true leader is not defined by titles, but by actions and the lives they touch. His story is the story of a boy from Kitebe Namaliga who dared to dream and never stopped until his dreams included everyone around him.

Today, as Mike Ssegawa stands before you, he is not just asking for your support; he is offering a partnership to walk this journey together—a journey towards a better Kassanda, where every child has the opportunity to learn, every farmer has the resources to grow, and every community member has a voice in shaping their future.
