Uganda’s Global Footprint Expands, but Domestic Challenges Linger – Uganda NGO Forum

Kampala, Uganda: The Uganda National NGO Forum (UNNGOF) has released a comprehensive report highlighting the country’s growing influence in global and regional affairs. The report, titled “A Renewed Commitment to a Just, Peaceful, and Resilient Uganda,” notes that Uganda’s leadership in various international forums has enhanced its role in global governance.

According to Moses Isooba, Executive Director of UNNGOF, Uganda’s hosting of the third South Summit of the G77 and China reaffirmed the country’s commitment to sustainable development, peace, and cooperation. Barbra Babweetera, Vice Chairperson of the NGO Forum, added that Uganda’s leadership within the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) has emphasized trade, science, technology, and tackling global challenges like crime, terrorism, and climate change.

Despite these achievements, the report highlights persistent challenges in human rights, poverty, and inequality. “Economic growth is offset by rising living costs, unemployment, and disparities,” Isooba noted. Climate change has exacerbated these issues, causing erratic weather patterns that disrupt agriculture, food security, and livelihoods.

The report also expresses concern over shrinking political freedoms, restrictions on expression, assembly, and association, and harassment of citizens and activists. “Civil society organizations face operational challenges, and citizens and activists endure harassment, thereby limiting democratic participation and advocacy for governance, human rights, and social justice,” the report states.

In addition, the report touches on Uganda’s progress in controlling malaria and the impact of the Parish Model Development (PDM) program, which has been hindered by corruption and abuse of office.

Overall, the report presents a nuanced view of Uganda’s progress and challenges, emphasizing the need for continued commitment to sustainable development, human rights, and social justice.
